Assistive Technology and EquipmentThe following assistive technology and equipment is available through the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office. Should you have any questions regarding services which are not available, please contact SSD at 572-7548. Once the installation of technology has been approved by the SSD office, Computer Support and SSD will work together to provide training assistance to students and their instructors when needed. Cassette Recorder/Player - 2-track recorders to record lectures or for use during study sessions. 4-track players are available for Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D). Available for check out in Room 117. Dragon Naturally Speaking - a voice recognition system which can control all the operations of a personal computer including word processors, databases, spreadsheets, netscape, E-mail, etc. This system can be operated by voice command or keyboard data entry. Located in Computer Lab, Room 85. Expert Mouse - designed for limited hand movement. It includes a large, comfortable ball with easy to click buttons and works well with all Windows programs. Available for check out in Room 117. Franklin Bookman - portable electronic reference with 500,000 in-depth definitions, thesaurus, pronunciation and grammar guide. Available for checkout in Room 117. Franklin Language Master - hand held speaking dictionary, thesaurus, grammar handbook and speller. It can assist students with visually impairments, learning disabilities or speech/language impairments. Available for check out in Room 117. JAWS for Windows - screen reader software that provides access to applications and the Internet. Available in Computer Lab, Room 85 and can be installed in other classrooms/labs upon request. Juliet Braille Printer - prints on both sides of a page (15 inches wide), with up to 56 characters wide. Located in Computer Lab, Room 85. Kurzweil 1000 - computer software that converts the printed work into speech for students who are blind or visually impaired. Kurzweil 3000 Read & Scan/Read - computer software that assists students with reading or learning difficulties in increasing their reading speed and comprehension. Kurzweil Scan/Read is available in Room 117E. Kurzweil Read is installed in the main Computer Lab, Room 85 and can be installed in other classrooms/labs when needed. LP Windows - magnifies computer text, graphics, and animation from 2X up to 16X, allowing students to see magnified documents and pictures. LP Windows is located in the main Computer Lab, Room 85 and can be installed in other classrooms/labs upon request. Magic Wand Keyboard - miniature IBM style computer Keyboard that works with the slightest touch of a wand. It accesses every feature of an IBM computer directly and easily. Available for check out in Room 117. Maltron Ergonomic Keyboard - single-handed keyboard for left hand usage. Available in Room 117. Microsoft Natural Keyboard - split, gently sloped keyboard that repositions the hands for less stressful, comfortable typing. A wrist leveler provides a way to adjust the keyboard to a straighter angle. Can be installed in computer labs upon request. Optelec (w/camera) - magnifying machine that assists students with low vision to read and write easily for greater self-reliance. Two Optelec Clearview magnification machines are available, one in Room 117E and the other in the Library. They can be used in conjunction with a camera (CCTV - Closed Circuit TV) to project from a whiteboard to the magnifying machine. Two Optelec 20/20 magnifiers are available at the Satellite Centers; one at the Sunland Park Educational Center and the other at the Gadsden Educational Center. Phonic Ear - wireless FM amplification system with independent microphone and FM volume controls. Phonic Ear is designed for student/instructor use in a large or small classroom setting. Available for check out in Room 117. Spelling Ace - portable speller that corrects more than 80,000 words and defines commonly confused words. Available for check out in Room 117. TTY (Telecommunication Typewriter) - is used to send typed messages back and forth over the telephone line for hearing or speech impairments. A TTY is located in Room 117, the Library and at the public phone by the Cashier’s Office. TV/VCR Combination - is for student use when information is provided in video format. Located in Room 117E. Windows 98 & 2000 Accessibility Options - Accessibility features unique to Windows 98 & 2000 include Sticky Keys and Mouse Keys. The options are designed to eliminate commands that require pushing and holding two buttons down at the same time. It adjusts drag for the mouse, and adjusts keyboard strokes to provide easier operations of the computer keyboard. These features are available on computers with Windows 98 & 2000 from the Control Panel. Window-Eyes - Windows based screen reader. Is available in Computer Lab in Room 85 and can be installed in other classroom labs when needed. ZoomText Xtra - using Level 1, students can magnify computer text, graphics, and animation allowing students to see magnified documents and pictures. ZoomText Xtra Level 2 features synchronized magnification and screen reading. Designed for the low-vision user, Level 2 speaks all on-screen text, echoes typing and automatically reads multi-page documents.
