Tutorial:  How to Attach Documents to Email/Bulletin Board Messages

Below you will find instructions for attaching and sending writing assignments within your WebCT site using the email/bulletin board tools.

Step 1:

  • Using Microsoft Word or Word Perfect, write your essay, proofread and edit it, and save it on your diskette.  Saving files as .rtf files (rich text format) is the safest format to save in because almost all computers have some program that will read .rtf files.  When you click on “Save as,” you will find the .rtf option by dropping down the option “save files as type” (or some phrase like that) and then choosing “.rtf”, or it might say “rich text format.  This will work in either WordPerfect of MSWord.  It also works with MSWorks.

Step 2:

  • Get into WebCT.

Step 3:

  • Click on the e-mail or bulletin board/discussions icon found on the course homepage.

Step 4:

  • Click on "Compose Mail Message" in email or “Compose Discussion Message” in the bulletin board.  You will find this button in the middle of your screen.

Step 5:

  • Click on the "Browse" button next to the dialogue box that asks you to whom you want to send the message.

Step 6:

  • In email, click on the name of the person to whom you want to send the message, and then on "OK".

Step 7:

  • Find the dialogue box at the bottom of the screen that asks for attachments.  Click on the button that says "browse" and browse to find your file.

Step 8:

  • Initially you may only be able to see .html files.  You will need to choose "all files" as the type of files to which you want to have access.

  • Once you find your essay, click on it, and then on "open".

Step 9:

  • Click on the "Attach File" button at bottom of the screen.  The name of your file will then appear in blue, which means that the file has been attached to your message.

Step 10:

  • Fill in the subject line by indicating what kind of assignment you are submitting.

Step 11:

  • You must now type a short message in the text box.  It only needs to be a few words long, such as "Here is my assignment."

Step 12:

Click on "Send" in email or “Post” in the bulletin board.
