Jazz Basics: With Great Recordings and Videos Presented by Dr. James E. Shearer, Regents Professor of Music, NMSU The basic components that make jazz a unique art form that has endured for over 100 years will be presented by listening to the music, by viewing historic video material of jazz greats and their life stories; by looking closely at today's most successful young artists; paying homage to the artist who pioneered the style of music that many are now calling "America's Classical Music". I - Historic Overview and Jazz Timeline. II - The Rhythm Section: From Jelly Roll Morton, through Count Basie, Oscar Perterson and Bill Evans and up to today. III - The Horn Players: Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, Ornette Coleman and today's jazz stars. IV - The Singers: Early blues singers, Sinatra, Ella, and Louis Armstrong, and brilliant young singers including Jamie Cullum, Norah Jones and Michael Buble. About the Academy for Learning in Retirement
- The Academy for Learning in Retirement is a program of educational opportunities of a scholarly nature for learners 50 years of age or older.
- It is sanctioned by New Mexico State University and operated by its own board under the auspices of Community Education at Doña Ana Community College.
- Members are eligible to attend noncredit courses taught by NMSU faculty and community experts.
- Courses are offered each month in the Spring and Fall semesters and generally consist of four one and one-half hour lectures.
- The fee for each course is usually $12. The fee depends on expenses.
The annual fee for membership (January 1 to December 31) is $5.
- Members receive program listings, newsletters, and the right to participate in the annual membership meeting.
