ABE Tutorial and Student Support Services

New Student Orientation, Goal Setting, Advising, and Pre-Testing

Students enrolling in ABE for the first time or who have been out for more than six months are asked to sign up for a new student orientation and/ or re-assessment at any of our learning centers. These are scheduled on a regular basis. Students will be informed about a variety of learning options available and how to make the best use of the many services and educational resources available. This session helps students make realistic choices when setting their educational goals. New students are also pre-assessed to design a learning plan that meets their needs and goals. The pre-assessment helps place a student at the best level; there are no grades, and no one can fail! Instructional specialists in GED, ESL, literacy, and citizenship are available for student advising.

Career Information - CHOICES

Computerized career information is available to students who are ready to explore career options, opportunities, and those desiring career training. This free assessment is strongly recommended for all GED and Advanced ESL students. An experienced adviser is available to explain the assessment results and to share other career information and resources. GED and advanced ESL students are also invited to attend workshops to help with the transition from ABE to college. Those who are unsure about their career options can make an appointment at 527-7546 to take this free assessment. It's never too soon to begin planning your future!

Individualized Tutoring and Small-Group Tutoring

A student who finds it difficult to attend classes, or who wants added help with ABE classes, can receive instruction through an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), with help from trained tutors at any of the four learning centers. Pre-assessment to determine the students learning needs and strengths are given and materials are selected to assist each student at his/her skill level.

Tutors, working with learners on a one-to-one or small group basis, provide personal attention and are available to answer questions and provide assistance. They are trained to give literacy tests, the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), practice test in GED, and ESL placement test (CASAS), and to explain the test results.

Learning Styles, Study Skills, and Tutoring

Students are provided with materials and information about time management, listening, note-taking, and test taking to help them become more successful in their studies. Information is also available about individual learning styles and how to improve study habits.
